A real island captured from the air as an interactive Gaussian splat

Raatosaari Island 3DGS

Raatosaari Island was scanned with a drone carrying a 360 camera. The video footage was processed into a Gaussian splat and published as an interactive online experience with annotations, hotspots, and guided camera perspectives.

01 · Problem

A place is not a flight path

A place like an island is hard to understand from a flat map, still image, or linear drone video. The viewer can see the shoreline, paths, vegetation, and spatial relationships, but they cannot freely explore the place or stop on the details that matter.

02 · Approach

Turn 360 drone footage into a navigable splat

We used aerial 360 drone footage as the capture source, processed it into a Gaussian splat, and prepared it as a browser-based 3D experience. The scene supports hotspots, annotations, text and image information, saved camera views, and simple free exploration around the island.

03 · Outcome

The island can be explored, not just watched

  • The island becomes a navigable online scene instead of a fixed video route.
  • Annotations and hotspots can explain points of interest directly in the spatial context.
  • Different camera perspectives can guide the viewer while still leaving room to look around freely.

Worth knowing before you write a brief

AppsFlyer's 2025 benchmark across 28 billion installs puts Day-1 retention at around 25%. AR apps sit below that floor, because every reviewer is a single-use case, not a habit. WebAR removes the funnel. The link that opened the experience the first time still opens it the second.
