Brand & retail

Shoppers are 65% more likely to buy with AR.

Shopify ran the math across millions of stores. The numbers are blunt. The mechanism transfers cleanly from product pages to construction, museums, and brand work.

Shopify's own publication "The ROI on AR" reports that visitors are 65% more likely to place an order after interacting with a product in AR, and 27% more likely to order after a 3D view without AR. They report a 94% average conversion lift on stores that add 3D content to product pages. They also report that returns drop by about 40% when shoppers can hold the product in their kitchen, on their wall, or in their hand before they buy.

These numbers are about the imagination gap

The reason a static product image converts worse than an AR view is not technological. It is that the static image asks the buyer to imagine the product in their context. The 3D view shows them the product. The AR view puts the product in their context. Each step removes work from the buyer.

The mechanism is not retail-specific. The same imagination gap explains why a planning committee approves a building faster when they see the 1:1 model on the actual lot, and why a museum visitor remembers an exhibit more when they can walk around the artefact in 3D rather than read a sign about it. The Shopify numbers are the cleanest published version of a more general truth.

What this means if you are not on Shopify

For brand and retail clients, the take-away is direct: a single 3D model of the product, optimised once, can power a product page and the AR view from a marketing link. 3D assets can be optimized to load fast and perform well even on older mid-range devices.

For construction and culture clients, the take-away is structural: the imagination gap is not retail's problem. It is everyone's. The same idea sits behind digital scale models: let people inspect the thing instead of asking them to imagine it from flat media.

Worth knowing before you write a brief

AppsFlyer's 2025 benchmark across 28 billion installs puts Day-1 retention at around 25%. AR apps sit below that floor, because every reviewer is a single-use case, not a habit. WebAR removes the funnel. The link that opened the experience the first time still opens it the second.
